Leading Organisations Call For Recognition Of Palliative Care And Pain Treatment As Human Rights

The International Association for Hospice and Palliative Care (IAHPC), the Worldwide Palliative Care Alliance (WPCA) and different organisations from around the world will topic today a Joint Declaration and Statement of Commitment calling for the identification of Palliative Care and Pain Treatment as Human Rights. The Declaration and Statement have been conjointly developed and signed by representatives of several international and regional organisations from Africa, Latin America, Eastern Europe, Western Europe, Asia and North America. The Declaration will be presented on Monday, August fourth at the XVII International AIDS Conference in Mexico City.

This is the first time that a Joint Declaration has been developed and signed by a solicitation of leading international organisations in the field of palliative tutelage, hospice, hurting, cancer, HIV/AIDS and others.

According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB), only a minority of the more than than one million people who die each calendar week receive alleviant care to alleviate their suffering. Developing countries, which represent roughly 80 per centum of the world's population, account for only near six percentage of spherical consumption of morphine, a mainstay therapy for alleviant care and pain controller.

"Even today, many health care plans, laws and treatment strategies for life-limiting conditions, such as cancer and HIV/AIDS, do not allow fair to middling access to palliative attention and pain in the neck management," according to Liliana De Lima, Executive Director of the IAHPC. "Patients have physical symptoms and special psychosocial and spiritual needs which require set aside care. Their family members and their caregivers too suffer the emotional and social consequences of the diseases and their treatments. With fair to middling palliative concern and nuisance treatment, most patients and their families can be relieved from their suffering, and the quality of their lives can be improved significantly. We want to bring this to the attention of policy makers and funders with this Declaration so that palliative care is included as a component of care in addition to prevention, early detection and active handling."

Sharon Baxter, Executive Director of the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association and Chair of the WPCA Advocacy Committee stated that "This is an unprecedented collective elbow grease by representatives from healthcare and patient advocacy organisations from about the world working together to achieve seven specific goals in palliative care and pain management."

The seven goals in the Declaration ar:

1- Identify, develop and implement strategies for the recognition of alleviant care and pain treatment as fundamental human rights.

2- Work with governments and insurance makers to adopt the necessary changes in legislation to insure appropriate care of patients with life-limiting conditions.

3- Work with policy makers and regulators to identify and eliminate regulatory and legal barriers that intervene with the rational habit of controlled medications.

4- Advocate for improvements in access to and availability of opioid analgesics (pain in the ass relievers) and other medications required for the good treatment of pain and other symptoms common in palliative attention, including limited formulations and appropriate medications for children.

5- Advocate for adequate resources to be made available to support the implementation of palliative care and pain treatment services and providers where needful.

6- Advocate for academic institutions, teaching hospital and universities to adopt the necessary practices and changes needed to ensure that palliative care and infliction positions, resources, personnel, infrastructures, review boards and systems are created and sustained.

7- Encourage and enlist other international and national palliative care, pain treatment, related organisations, associations, federations and interested parties to join this global hunting expedition for the recognition of palliative upkeep and pain treatment as human rights.

"The Declaration will be used by non-governmental organisations, professional organisations, federations, alliances and civic-minded individuals to bring alleviant care and pain treatment to the attention of policy makers, regulators, governments and organisations in order to ameliorate the care of patients with life-limiting conditions, and to provide support to their families and loved ones," Ms. Baxter stated.

The Joint Declaration and Statement of Commitment is also scheduled to be presented in meetings sponsored by genus Cancer, palliative maintenance and hurting management organisations throughout the rest of the year. The IAHPC and WPCA invite other interested organisations and individuals to polarity the Declaration using the online signature page at www.hospicecare.

Sheen fails in bid to stop Richards TV show

Actor Charlie Sheen has lost a bid to prevent his ex-wife Denise Richards from including their two daughters in a new reality TV show, after a Los Angeles judge ruled in the actress' favour.
Sheen is objecting to letting the former couple's girls, three-year-old Sam and two-year-old Lola, take part in the TV programme.
But after a closed hearing at the Los Angeles family court on Tuesday, Commissioner Harvey A Silberman ruled Richards was allowed to include the children in the programme, subject to a number of rules.
The details of which have yet to be released.
Richards was represented in court by her attorney, who participated via telephone, while Sheen attended the hearing with his lawyer.
The TV show will reportedly revolve around Richards' life as a working single mum in Hollywood.

NY student accuses Lindsay Lohan of stealing coat

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A New York student claiming Lindsay Lohan made off with her $11,000 mink coat after both women attended a party at a Manhattan nightclub sued the actress on Monday for damages.

Masha Markova, a Columbia University student, said the coat -- a treasured gift from her grandmother -- disappeared in January during a private party at the trendy 1Oak nightclub, where Lohan, 21, was also a guest.

Some time later, Markova spotted Lohan posing in the coat in a photograph in OK! magazine, Markova's lawyer, Merrill Cohen, said.

Markova complained to the club and said the coat was eventually returned to her smelling of "cigarettes and liquor."

Lohan's actions were "intentional, oppressive and malicious and were carried out with reckless disregard" for Markova's rights, according to the lawsuit, filed in New York state court. She did not specify the amount of damages sought.

A representative for Lohan was not immediately available for comment.

Lohan shot to fame after starring in such films as "Freaky Friday," "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen" and "Mean Girls" before succumbing to several stints in rehabilitation and spending time behind bars for a drunken driving and cocaine-possession conviction.

Jennifer Aniston's hair 'most envied' by women

Women envy Jennifer Aniston's hair more than any other celebrity, according to a recent survey.
In a poll of 1,600 people commissioned by Hair magazine, it was found that Aniston's hair is the most coveted followed by Catherine Zeta-Jones, Cat Deeley, Penelope Cruz, Angelina Jolie, Natalie Imbruglia, Victoria Beckham, Nicole Kidman, Sharon Stone and Sienna Miller.
The survey also named 'the bob' - as popularised by Victoria Beckham and Katie Holmes - as the "most iconic haircut" of all time.
The hairstyle, originally associated with Sixties stars such as Mary Quant and Twiggy, beat Aniston's sleek, long Friends cut in the survey.
Her hairdo sparked the biggest hair craze of the Nineties as women flocked to salons to ask for 'a Rachel'.
The Amy Winehouse-style Sixties beehive was third, followed by the 1970s Farrah Fawcett feathered number, as recently imitated by Madonna.
Mia Farrow's ultra-short 'Rosemary's Baby' crop was fifth in the online poll, commissioned by Hair magazine, followed by the heavy fringe worn to the side that Lady Diana Spencer sported when she announced her engagement to the Prince of Wales.
Joanna Lumley's 'Purdey bob' from her period in 'The New Avengers' was seventh.

John Lennon's ex-girlfriend reveals photos

John Lennon's former girlfriend May Pang has released a collection of intimate snaps of the late Beatle.
Pang began an 18-month fling with Lennon in 1973, during a separation from his wife Yoko Ono.
After keeping the personal pictures under wraps for 35 years, Pang is sharing her photos of life with the "real John Lennon", along with a collection of his private sketches, in her new book 'Instamatic Karma'.
Talking about the pictures Pang said: "They were literally in a shoebox under my bed. A friend of mine said, 'You've got to get this out. People have got to see the John that you saw.'"
She added: "So this is an intimate portrait of our lives together. You're seeing him through my eyes."

World's most famous spy, James Bond, back in book

LONDON (Reuters) - A warship moored in the Thames and Royal Marines mounted guard on Tuesday to mark the return to action of the world's most famous spy, James Bond, in a new novel.

"Devil May Care", published on Wednesday, is the latest adventure for the hard-drinking, womanizing action hero created by Ian Fleming and adored by millions worldwide through 14 books and a series of blockbuster films.

Penned by British novelist Sebastian Faulks at the request of Fleming's estate the novel is set in 1967 and portrays the ageing licensed killer as vulnerable and damaged but with an undiminished sex drive.

Publication marks the centenary of Fleming's birth.

To honor Bond's code name 007, Faulks signed seven copies of the book, which were then taken under guard from HMS Exeter to a book store in central London ahead of publication.

Faulks is better known for his wartime novels such as "Charlotte Gray" and "Birdsong". He admits he was somewhat daunted when asked to write as Fleming, describing it as counter-casting.

But the idea grew on him and he warmed to the task, emulating Fleming's rigid work schedule and studying his plot lines and prose for inspiration.

"In his house in Jamaica, Ian Fleming used to write a thousand words in the morning, then go snorkeling, have a cocktail, lunch on the terrace, more diving, another thousand words in late afternoon, then more Martinis and glamorous women," said Faulks.
